Chapter Nineteen

Alex felt invigorated as they turned the study into a research library for him and Matheo. Kaleb was hauling boxes and books from a storage facility somewhere. Alex was making a book list from memory of what he had in his room and what they needed to get their hands on. The best books were from Mr. Henry’s collection, so he had to find another way to get to them. He hoped Matheo had some connections.

Mickey was helping, too, but it was obvious that his interests were not in books.

“Workaholics,” Bill and Warwick said, looking on from the door. Kaleb came through a book case, it seemed, and put down another box of books.

“There you are,” Bill said. “Do you mind if we borrow Mickey? He looks like someone who’d rather play hoops than research.”

“Is it that obvious?” Mickey smiled and shot Kaleb an apologetic look.

Kaleb grinned. “That’s not my call,” he said, and Alex shot him a glance, trying to see through his façade. No problem, he was hurt and trying to accommodate Mickey so he’d at least stay.

“If you need a break carrying boxes, then come and play for a little while, too,” Mickey said, and Alex had no trouble reading his face either. None of them would be world class poker players within the next decade.

“I might,” Kaleb said. Mickey left with Bill and Warwick, leaving Kaleb staring after him with something akin to nostalgia.

“What is it you two share in that game?” Alex asked.

“Our first kiss.”

“Good, go play.”

“I don’t want to, I suck at it.”

“Are you... Kaleb, he knows that! Why would he invite you onto the court then?” Alex asked. He reminded himself that Kaleb was young and inexperienced with life and thus insecure with love. That he could help and read Alex and Pritchard still amazed him. But he also knew it was the collective memories that kicked in when he served. This was just the teenager.

“You think so?”

“Yes, I do... Matheo?”

“How would I know, I’m a barely pubescent runt in this cycle.”

“I keep forgetting how your wisdom is concealed by human behavior.”

“Only knowledge is there, and you unlock some of it with your brilliant observations. I guess you are the teacher now, Alex.” Matheo smiled and Alex felt proud.

“Go on, Kaleb,” Alex said. Kaleb smiled and left.

“World map!” Matheo said and held up a huge map.

“Wow, the only place I can think of big enough for that is the ceiling,” Alex said.

Matheo looked up. “The ceiling it is!”
